This magnificent citadel was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage circuit in 1990. It was built in a location previously inhabited by the Etruscan population of the 3rd century BC. During the Middle Ages the town was a stop on the Via Francigena, with significant trade occurring at that time. Only 13 of the 72 famous ancient towers remain, including the most important: Torre Rognosa and Torra Grossa, the former 52m high and the latter (open to the public) 54m. |
